What is a good fight? Most of us would probably answer, “One that you win”. When I was growing up the only fights I heard about were on the playground at school, or perhaps on the way home; or the fights in sporting events, one team against another to win a game, etc. But as I began to study and learn the Bible I found out that we have a “fight of faith”. Now I want to be sure to make it clear that we are NOT fighting God for our faith. He wants us to have faith. The fight of faith has to do with us believing the Word of God and speaking it over our circumstances. We are to use our words in agreement with THE WORD OF GOD, against principalities, powers and rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness (Ephesians 6:12). If we think our faith is weak then we need to hear more of the Word, for the Bible tells us in Romans 10:17 that faith comes by hearing and hearing the Word of God. This is a continuous process; every day we need to hear the Word.
I was reading in Second Timothy, chapter four today. Paul is actually talking about his departure from this world and he makes the comment that he had fought the good fight, had finished his course, and he kept the faith. Now that’s a great testimony any way you look at it. I believe the “course” he is talking about here is the purpose that God had for his life. We also have a course to fulfill and complete. It is in essence our faith walk! God has called each of us for a reason and we have a place of service in His Kingdom. A good fight of faith is using the Word of God to win our victories in battles, trials, and over temptations. The only way we can keep on this course of victory is by applying the Word to our lives by speaking it over our lives, and living according to God’s Word.
We are to be strong and not be weary in well doing (Galatians 6:9) but continue each day to complete the purpose of our life. We are all called to be a witness of God’s love. So we need to stay on course, not be weary in well doing, and continue to keep our faith, for this is our reasonable service. So actually a good fight is walking by faith.
2 Timothy 4:7 – I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.
Galatians 6:9 – And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.
Romans 12:1 – I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.
