This week we are going to talk about our God-given authority in the Name of Jesus. As children of God we need to learn how to correctly use the authority and power that Jesus Christ has given us in His Name. We are also going to talk about how neglectful we are at times to fight our fight of faith or in some cases even to recognize the danger we are in.
So let’s begin.
Picture this: You’re walking across your living room and through the window your see four people walking up to your house. You’re not concerned because you always have the doors closed and locked. However, this time is different. All at once you realize that these four people have just walked into your home! They never rang the doorbell or knocked on the door. They just walked in, uninvited, and acting like they belong there. You yell at them to get out of your house but they act like they were long lost friends and begin to make themselves comfortable. They try to start a conversation with you by asking you questions about you and your family. You catch yourself beginning to answer their questions and realize you shouldn’t because these intruders have no right to be there. When you insist they leave your home, one distracts you with another question while the others separate, going different directions and into different rooms.
This may sound like the beginning for a movie but actually it was a dream I had or maybe I should call it a nightmare. But either way you call it there is a lesson to be learned and applied to our lives.
First let me say that this isn’t just about me and my home but about how the children of God let down their guard and allow the enemy to intrude into our lives. Sometimes we see the danger coming and sometimes we don’t. It could be a temptation, a heath or financial problem, or a relationships between friends, co-workers, or even family. This lesson is about those times when we see the danger and don’t recognize it for what it is – an attack from the Devil – an intrusion into our life – and don’t take authority over it.
Satan comes into our lives to distract us in such a way to divide our attention so we don’t see the real problem. When that happens we neglect to correctly use the authority Jesus gave us and we become ensnared in the devil’s devices and deceptions. Satan is very subtle and cunning in his advances and that’s why it is of utmost importance to always be on guard so we can protect ourselves from his attacks. Now obviously we know that attacks will come, but there are probably many times when we could stop the attack completely or at least minimize the effects of the attack if we speak the Word of God over our circumstances.
Remember in the dream that I said that we always keep our doors closed and locked. Well according to that dream it is possible to forget to guard our home. So it is with our heart. If we become lazy about renewing our mind to the Word; if we become distracted with life to the extent that we are not spending time in prayer and reading our Bible, we will be leaving at least one place open for the enemy to enter our lives. The Bible calls this, “giving place to the devil” in Ephesians 4:27. This opening can be in the form of wrong thinking, wrong words, and wrong attitudes and motives, to mention a few areas.
One troublesome fact in this dream is that these intruders just walked right in the door, not knocking, not ringing the doorbell. This tells me that we can leave an opening available for intruders and not be aware of it. The second truth I want to point out is the fact that in this dream, I “saw” them coming and didn’t take action to check my safety. The key is to be aware of the tactics of the enemy and to guard ourselves with the Word of God (Ephesians 6:11).
Remember that in the dream the constant diversion of my attention caused me to engage in conversation with the intruders. But the whole objective of the enemy is not to be friends with us but to distract us and deceive us in order to get a foothold and then a stronghold in our lives so he can kill, steal and destroy us. (John 10:10)
If we try to converse with the devil, we will lose the battle; WE NEED ONLY TO SPEAK THE WORD OF GOD IN THE AUTHORITY GIVEN US. THE POWER IN JESUS’ NAME IS SUFFICIENT AGAINST THE ATTACKS OF THE ENEMY.
Our winning strategy is the Word of God. We must learn to use the power of saying “it is written…..” just like Jesus did when He quoted Scripture back to the devil. Jesus is our example of how to fight a spiritual battle. A note to the wise: learn the Word of God.
My prayer for us this week is that we will spend time with our Lord and ask Him if there is any area where we have left an “open door” in our life whereby “giving place to the devil” -giving him access to cause us problems. (Ephesians 4:27). If that be the case, then I also pray that we will find the appropriate Scriptures to close and guard our life against the attacks of the enemy and at the same time find the appropriate Scriptures that open our heart to receive the blessings of God.
Proverbs 6:2 – You are snared with the words of your mouth, and taken with the words of your mouth. Our words have power.
Proverbs 18:21 – Death and life are in the power of the tongue. Monitor your words and what they are producing in your life. Change your words to change your life.
2 Corinthians 10:5 – Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bring into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ. We need to pay attention to what we are watching and listening to on the TV and with our music. These are gateways that both the devil and God use to teach and train us.
John 10:10 – The thief comes to steal and to kill and to destroy, but I am come that they might have life, and have it more abundantly. The thief is the devil and Jesus is our Savior, Deliverer, Healer, and Provider.
Ephesians 6:11-18 – Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles (attacks) of the devil.
