Light Dispels Darkness

thThe other day I was sitting in my living room and just happened to look across the room toward the front door.  In my amazement I saw dust on my piano!  How could that be, I’d just dusted the other day!  Anyone besides me notice how quickly dust accumulates in your home?  Hah!  Well I got to thinking about how I’d missed seeing that dust and realized that I only saw it when light from the front door was shining in.  Otherwise that area was dimmer and the dust just didn’t show up.  So this week’s post is about dispelling the darkness that wants to creep into our lives in the areas of wrong attitudes, words, and even our thoughts.  First, let’s study about what light does.

Light dispels darkness!  In our natural world we know that with even the smallest amount of light we are able to see well enough to walk across a dark room and not walk into the furniture.  Of course the more light there is the clearer we see.  I’m sure that all of us have proven this point many times.  Spiritually speaking it only takes a small amount or wrong thinking to cause wrong attitudes and wrong words.  This is the reason we need to be in the Word each day; to keep the Light of the Word shining in our spirit so we are aware of any darkness that’s trying to overcome us.  Jesus came to dispel that darkness.

Jesus said, “I am the light of the world: he that follows me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.”  (John 8:12)  Jesus is The Word, The Light, The Truth, and The Life, so the more we have of Him in our hearts the clearer we will see spiritually.  The purpose of Jesus being THE LIGHT is to shine into our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of the glory of God.  (2 Corinthians 4:6)  We are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, “called out of darkness into his marvelous light.  (1 Peter 2:9)

The more Light of the Truth of the Word we have in our spirit the quicker we will be aware of when we are being pulled away into carnal thinking.  The Bible tells us that to be carnally minded is death because the carnal mind is enmity against God; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.  (Romans 8:6-7)  To be carnally minded means that a person is ruled by sensual pleasures and appetites.  But to be spiritually minded is to be ruled by the truth of the Word of God.  So if we don’t know enough of the Word we are apt to give in to wrong thoughts and desires that will lead into sin.  We can’t stop wrong thoughts from coming but we can stop them taking root in our lives.  We negate wrong thoughts by replacing them with right thinking; thinking about the Word and by not giving voice to those wrong thoughts (agreeing with them with our words).

Thoughts are like weeds in our thinking; if we pull out the wrong thoughts early when they first appear, they will not become strongholds in our mind.  Deeds formulate from thoughts which is why it is so important to monitor our thoughts, casting down wrong thoughts and imaginations, and to renew our minds to the Word of God.  (2 Corinthians 10:4-5, Romans 12:2)   So don’t become agitated when you hear the Truth because it’s the Light of the God’s Word exposing the “dusty” deeds of evil.  Don’t shy away from the Light of Truth of the Word fearing exposure of any sin and don’t get stuck in the problem of sin because of wrong thinking, but let the Light of the Word expose any wrong and let that same Light clean your heart and renew your spirit.  (John 3:19-21, Psalm 51:10)

My prayer this week is, that as we draw closer to God, the Light of the Truth of His Word would expose any sin in our heart and mind; that we will take authority over any wrong thoughts, attitudes, and words, and continue to renew our mind to His Word allowing the Light of Jesus to dispel any darkness attacking us.
