WE ARE TO LOVE GOD. The past few months we have studied some topics about, “Think On This”, which includes who God is, and does. God loves us, God heals us, God forgives us, God is faithful, God is Holy and just, and God provides for us financially. Now it’s time to study about our responsibility as His children. So, today’s topic to think about is, “We Are To Love God”.
Deuteronomy 6:5 instructs us to, “love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength”. In chapter eleven, verse 1 the instructs us to love the Lord our God and keep His commandments always. Verse 11 tells us to be careful to keep these commandments and to walk in all His ways. It’s easy to see, and understand that if we truly love our Heavenly Father, we will obey His Word.
To help us make the right decision to obey, the Lord tells us that within His commandments are life and death. Heaven and earth are witnesses that he has set before us life and death, blessing and cursing; therefore, choose life. The life God wants for us is wrapped up in our love for Him, and demonstrated in our obedience to Him. (Deuteronomy 30:15-19) Even in this world we express our love for another by serving them; not as a slave serves because of fear, but our service for God comes from a heart of loving appreciation of all that He has done for us. And, of course, that He loved us first! (1 John 4:19)
Jesus stated in Matthew 22:37, “you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all you soul, and with all your mind”. Loving God with our heart will determine the desires we have in life. Loving God with our soul determines how we monitor our emotions and behavior in our life. And loving God with our mind will change our thinking to His way of thinking.
If we say we believe that He will always be with us, then we will know that He walks with us across a parking lot toward a department store. If we say that He is always with us, then we realize that He is with us in our living room when we are choosing shows on the television. We not only will desire to live holy in all areas of our lives, we will make decisions that exhibits His holiness in our heart, that in turn will be evident outwardly in our lives.
We learn from First John 2:5 that, whoever keeps His Word, truly the love of God is perfected in him. By this we know that we are in Him. In other words, how much we determine to obey His Word is in direct proportion to how much we love God. It’s that simple.
Let’s purposely think about how we can should our love to God in our obedience to live according to His Word, and by serving others with His love for them.
